The new cold war continues to heat up. The Russians have been expressing their displeasure with the USA’s plan to put a missile-defense system into Poland for a long time. However, the American political establishment, both Republicans and Democrats, have been ignoring the Russians for years.
The Russians have sent a clear message in Georgia that it is now very dangerous to ignore their diplomatic positions. Yet, the Bush administration has accelerated its “Contain and Shrink Russia” policy by speeding up its deal with Poland.
Today, a Russian general said that their military doctrine allows them to attack Poland, and to use nuclear weapons in doing so.
The Bush Administration’s policy toward Russia has been very aggressive. Why? Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russians have been pretty well-behaved. Yes, there is a lot of oil and gas in central Asia, but instead of risking a nuclear war, wouldn’t it make more sense to do things such as drill off the coast Florida and in Alaska? Besides, its not like the Russians wouldn’t simply sell that oil and gas anyway.
President Bush is being extremely foolish. He will eventually have to back down. Now, it is only a question of how embarrassing it will be, and how serious the black eye that the Russians will give him.
